German bank Sparkasse turns to Saft lithium-ion backup technology for its data center
- UPS package integrates Saft’s Flex’ion lithium-ion battery systems with Piller Group power conversion and control technology
- This solution provides an essential backup for the data center that underpins continuity for critical retail and business banking
Paris, November 12, 2019 – Saft has delivered and installed Flex’ion lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery systems to provide backup power at a Sparkasse data center. Sparkasse is Germany’s largest public banking group.
In their second collaboration this year, Saft and Piller Group worked together to combine Saft’s renowned Flex’ion Li-ion battery system with Piller Group’s Uninterruptible Power Supply System (UPS). The solution will provide high performance backup for the data center. Saft’s scope included design, manufacture, supply, installation and commissioning.
Franck Cecchi, Executive Vice President of Saft’s Industrial Standby Division said: “Saft has successfully secured power for many data centers, including one of the world’s largest industrial supercomputers and a major player in music streaming. Now, we want to build on these successes and expand the adoption of our unique Flex’ion solution to the critical bank market, where data integrity is essential to prevent massive financial losses in the event of a power outage.”
Two Flex’ion systems have been ordered for the data center, each of which is able to deliver 373 kW for 15 minutes at the end of its design life of 15 years.
In terms of safety, Saft’s Flex’ion is based on the firm’s proprietary Super Lithium Iron Phosphate electrochemistry, which is inherently safe for critical sites. Whereas valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries have been used widely in data centers until now, Saft’s Flex’ion Li-ion battery technology offers superior performance, reliability, high availability and low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) over a long life. Li-ion batteries have high energy density and power output, meaning that they can be more compact and lightweight.
Another advantage of Flex’ion battery system is that its Li-ion technology operates effectively at elevated temperatures. This reduces cooling requirements and improves Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE). A further benefit is the ability to fast charge, meaning that batteries can be recharged quickly for maximum availability.
Manufactured in Europe, Saft’s Flex’ion Li-ion battery systems are designed for mission-critical applications, mainly in the data center market, but also in oil and gas, utility, industry and building markets.
