Proven nickel battery technology to secure the safety of passenger transportation
Working trackside and signaling installations are vital to the operation of trains, metros, and Saft's reliable nickel-based batteries provide the backup power whenever and wherever it is needed.
Saft nickel batteries are designed to the highest standards to guarantee power for signaling, crossing operations, control, security supervision and telecommunications equipment over long discharge periods.
Field-proven, they boast a long-life expectancy, are compact, have excellent electrical performance and work at extreme temperatures. They also have a high resistance to electrical and mechanical abuse with ultra-low to no operating maintenance needs.
Digital signaling technology is a further development of electronic signaling technology for trackside equipment.
Saft’s Flex’ion Li-ion battery backup power is crucial for safety and reliability of the new digital trackside infrastructure. Flex’ion’s integrated, optimized concept delivers high power performance combined with the highest safety levels and a low environmental footprint.

Our battery solutions for rail infrastructure ensure reliable power and smooth operation of trains and metros in the most extreme conditions, from the heat of Cairo to the cold of the Cachemire region in India.

Saft operates the only plant in the world that produces nickel-cadmium batteries incorporating metals that have been reclaimed on site from spent batteries, reducing their eco-footprint. Recycling Ni-Cd batteries is a complex process that involves separating the nickel, cobalt and cadmium from the electrodes, a process perfected by Saft’s plant in Oskarshamn, Sweden – the only one worldwide involved in both the recycling and manufacturing of Ni-Cd batteries and incorporating recycled metals.
Saft operates a network of over 30 bring back points worldwide that receive spent Ni-Cd batteries produced at Saft factories, as well as those made by its competitors. The bring back point located in northern Europe brings these used batteries back to Oskarshamn, minimizing transportation. Other bring back points work with other fully permitted recycling partners selected by Saft to ensure that the recovery rates mandated imposed by the EU battery directive are met.
Awards
Saft was awarded a top rating in 2021 by Ecovadis, a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) rating organization for sustainable development performance, scoring in the 96th percentile on: environment, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement.
