Nickel batteries for instant, robust, reliable and long-lasting power 

Mining, cement, chemical and paper-pulp plants are just a few that need constant power to remain safe and keep operational.  

Our robust nickel batteries provide immediate backup power, protecting staff, plant, and production as well as ensuring emergency lighting, security and fire protection. Customers around the world entrust their process control, pumps, distribution, gas turbines, emergency lighting and security systems, industrial fire monitors and alarms to Saft in the event of a power failure.  

Our high-performance nickel batteries also ensure the continuity of critical loads for switchgear electrical circuit protection and switch tripping, engine starting for emergency power generation and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition). 

Unlike lead-acid batteries, which are prone to sudden failure, they are extremely reliable and long-lasting, with a life expectancy of more than 20 years. They are also maintenance free and can withstand high temperatures without degrading.

Saft operates the only plant in the world that produces nickel-cadmium batteries incorporating metals that have been reclaimed on site from spent batteries, reducing their eco-footprint.  Recycling Ni-Cd batteries is a complex process that involves separating the nickel, cobalt and cadmium from the electrodes, a process perfected by Saft’s plant in Oskarshamn, Sweden – the only one worldwide involved in both the recycling and manufacturing of Ni-Cd batteries and incorporating recycled metals. 

Saft operates a network of over 30 bring back points worldwide that receive spent Ni-Cd batteries produced at Saft factories, as well as those made by its competitors. The bring back point located in northern Europe brings these used batteries back to Oskarshamn, minimizing transportation. Other bring back points work with other fully permitted recycling partners selected by Saft to ensure that the recovery rates mandated imposed by the EU battery directive are met.

  • Designed for applications where the batteries are usually required to sustain:
    - electrical loads for between 30 minutes to three hours
    - "mixed" loads involving a mixture of high and low discharge rates
    - frequent or infrequent discharges

SBH HIGH POWER nickel battery range (H type)

  • Ni-Cd battery capacity range at C5 A rate: from 8.3 Ah to 920 Ah in 51 capacity steps
  • Typical discharge range is from one second to 30 minutes

  • Designed for applications demanding :
    - a relatively high current over short periods - usually less than 30 min duration
    - applications can have frequent or infrequent discharges
